Things I Love Thursday
Planned domesticity — I have started planning how my apartment in New York is going to look. I cannot even tell you how excited I am. I haven’t lived on my own — in my own place — since 2006, which feels like it was a very long time ago. I am getting all delighted about colour schemes, the sort of kitchen implements I’ll buy (not that I cook), what I’ll hang on the wall, bedding, rugs, lamps, awesome gear for my writing area… I’m going to resurrect my rainbow of vintage typewriters, & put pictures of my friends all over the walls, & have pink striped bedsheets. Probably. & I am DYING to go to a secondhand bookshop & stock up! I am going to take one of those grandma carts that you usually put your groceries in, & trundle them back to my house with an enormous grin on my face. Bliss-o-rama, for real!
Looking forward to things! Here is a brief list. I am looking forward to… Working side-by-side with Nubby at Darling HQ in New York City; seeing Helen this weekend (I haven’t seen her in well over 2 years!); seeing Skelerina on Monday (ditto on 2 years!); going dancing this weekend; being in Auckland in January (there are so many people because it’s Big Day Out time, I have heaps of friends there who I adore & the weather & energy is totally perfect); giving away amazing prizes as part of the iCiNG 13 Days Of Christmas!; kicking it with Sammy, Zoetica, Lumi, Star & Violet in California in February; visiting Florida; being in America full-time; everything! EVERYTHING!
My holographic unicorn necklace — It’s way too amazing not to warrant its own heart-shaped bulletpoint! I want to go out just so I have an excuse to wear it. Having an accessory or piece of clothing that makes you feel like that is so awesome, & it doesn’t even have to cost you a lot (in my case, about 7 bucks)!
Kanye West & Nas — Yes, I saw them on Tuesday night! First up, 808’s & Heartbreaks is really, really good, despite the autotune madness. I especially like Say You Will, Paranoid & Street Lights. The show was amazing — Kanye & Nas were both brilliant, & I was so thrilled to be able to go. I thought I wouldn’t be able to, but then at the last minute my friend offered me a ticket, so I quickly got dressed, took photos (of course!) & raced out the door! I danced like a complete fooligan, until my back was aching & my feet were incapacitated. It was brill. A++.
I wish this song would really come true, I admit I still fantasize about you…
Free phones! My New Zealand phone stopped working — sad trombone! — but my friend is couriering me a new one! How great is that?! It will be exciting to be able to send text messages again, what a thrill! Haha.
Honourable mentions: John Legend feat. Andre 3000 – Green Light (Three Stacks [Andre] is incidentally the hottest, coolest vegan on the planet); the Grease soundtrack (I swear I will be rocking it in my 70s — & still swooning over Danny Zucco); Placebo’s cover of Running Up That Hill by Kate Bush; immaculate hot pink mani/pedicures; getting work done ahead of time (best feeling in the world); ridiculous frivolous purchases (ice-cream scented bubbles? WHY NOT?!); fake tan (I’ve been using St Tropez mousse & it is BRILLIANT); …I can’t even write the name of this song because I am so embarrassed that I like it (plz don’t judge); perfect eyebrows (truly satisfying); unexpected emails; Helen & Mama Turk; the fact that someone went to the trouble of making this (a-m-a-z-i-n-g); Beyonce’s Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It) which I think is the funniest concept for a song ever (“QUICK GIRLS, GET MARRIED!”) but is also an awesome booty-shake song (you can imagine that if you like); Tim Ferriss (I love his ass); BFFs in Minneapolis!; buying domains in bulk (I’m so excited, YAY new projects!); Will Ferrell as Harry Caray (“HEY!!!”); N.W.A’s “explicit content only” version of Straight Outta Compton & by the way it is sooooo NSFW & I kind of want to make one of those songs my ringtone; my brand spanking new hot pink piggybank from Nadine!; Jake!; pulling my hair back in un petite pomp (like miniature Marie Antoinette!); talking about boys with clever girls, & dark chocolate-covered ginger. Yum.
“Don’t despair too much if you see beautiful things destroyed, if you see them perish. Because the best things are always growing in secret.” — Ben Okri
& you? What had you leaping out of your seat to call your best friend this week?!
