Jem-Inspired Makeover!

[ 16 April 2008 ]

What happens when you & your make-up artist friend have a free afternoon?

Why, you make a mess with glitter & highly pigmented eye-shadow, of course!

Jem-inspired makeover

Initially, we were aiming for a Jem & The Holograms look, but after perusing some galleries online, decided that lightning bolts on the cheeks (etc.) was a bit much for a Wednesday…

Jem-inspired makeover

Instead, we did a “normal” eye, complete with false eyelashes (Marie glued those Swarovski crystals on herself, pretty clever huh?), & a huge pink & iridescent glitter star over the other eye. Unfortunately it was hard to get photos of…

Jem-inspired makeover

I think it all turned out pretty well, though!

  2. Gala! I really adore you (not in a weird way though!) LOL. As I’m typing this, I am watching your vlogs and just trying to figure out why you’re so f’ing fabulous!? Please tell me what I can do to enjoy life as much as you do. I have a 3 year old daughter and a husband and I want to enjoy them and enjoy life. Please inspire me! :D (great pics by the way)

Keep reading & I’m sure you’ll come across some things that resonate with you, encourage you & give you ideas! Though I have to say, being open & optimistic & loving goes a long way, too ;> xxx

  4. Oh. My. God. As soon as I saw the photos I literally did a 5 second GASP! I almost sucked in a fly! They look amazing!! Better than any magazine make-up shoot, no joke.
Funky fresh dressed to impress, ready to par-ty

  5. Wow! You make up is gorgeous, especially the crystals on the eye! It’s totally fresh and new, and your ring matches perfectly! :D

  7. I LOOOOVE the eyelashes!! Are they falsies on the lower lid too? So luscious! You look fantastic in pink.

    <3 Nadine · Apr 16, 05:25 AM · #
  8. Ooh! I felt kind of the same today (less, of course – your makeup is awesome) because my friend stuck a pink diamante heart to my cheek – just under my eye (they should have a better word for that. I guess the top of the apple of my cheek.

    <3 Virginia · Apr 16, 05:25 AM · #
  9. Thank you, cuties!

Nadine — Nope, those are my real lashes… just mascara’d. I don’t normally put mascara on my lower lashes except for the outer corner, because it tends to look a bit drag-a-licious! But it worked for this look ;>

  10. What brand/shade of pink was used to make the star? It’s so bright! =O

  15. so fun!!! you really rock those eyelash crystals, Gala! :D do they feel funny on your lashes though? like an extra weight? I’ve always wondered… :)

    <3 Casey · Apr 16, 06:43 AM · #
  16. Ahahaha! Try taking the photo with the other hand for a shot of the star, perhaps? (I take ‘backwards photos’ with my left hand too, despite being right-handed.) The crystals are really cool. I’ve always liked eyelashes with beaded-type stuff on the tips.

    <3 sora · Apr 16, 06:49 AM · #
  17. wow! you look amazing. i’d love to do something like this, haha, somehow i doubt it would work though- i can’t even put on my own eyeliner (i’ll work out this makeup business one day!)

and is this the new camera? it’s excellent.

  23. i’m a 90’s baby, but when you posted jem before, it totally spurred me into an all-day marathon (which, by the way, brightened my whole week/life!)

& you totally pull of the makeup perfectly!! :D

we nonpareils are so very lucky to have such a gorgeous gala to inspire us

  26. It reminds me more of david bowie ala Aladdin Sane than anything else, but maybe that’s because I never watched Jem growing up.It looks super-cute,though!

    <3 Candra · Apr 16, 10:31 AM · #
  27. Ooooh, fabulous!

Did you wear this out? Please say yes! If I came across a girl in that kind of makeup, I’d probably stop her on the street and beg her to be my friend. Or at least I would heap loads of compliments on her and take her picture…

    <3 Kori · Apr 16, 11:22 AM · #
  28. Totally cool! I love the colours, the crystals, the shapes, everything!!! What a pity that the glitter doesn’t come across! Sometimes more is more! ;-) The star reminds me of Kate Moss’s birthday make-up:

    www.celebrity

which of course also reminds me of Paul Stanley of Kiss ;-)

  29. gala you look amazing! free afternoons are definitely the best time to experiment with new makeup ideas. I tried to pull off something like this a while ago using brightly colored eyeliner, though it didn’t turn out nearly as nice (all streaky from the filled-in pencil), plus it kept smudging. do you have any tips for looking as amazingly jem-tastic as you?

    <3 jamie jellybean · Apr 16, 11:42 AM · #
  30. ooh just a thought, do you think the urban decay high pigment shadow would work well for something like this? it is definitely the most amazingly deeply pigmented eye shadow I’ve ever found. (not sure if anyone here uses that product line though)

    <3 jamie jellybean · Apr 16, 11:47 AM · #
  31. very cute, Gala!

  35. I was wondering, because I want to be a writer but I often lose the inspiration, could you do like, creative writing missions also? Like the cupcake missions. It would definitely be encouraging! =D

  36. You are such a rockstar!~

And I had no idea pink eyeshadow could actually look that good—always had the impression it’d seem ill or at least like an allergic reaction to something..and was unwilling to attempt it..
    but here tis GORGEOUS!

Maybe it’ll work on brown eyes and tan skin too? Maybe the pink shadows my aunt got for me won’t go to waste after all! _
    thnx for the inspiration~

  39. You look beautiful!

My friend (who loves having fun with makeup) did a similar thing to me – but with clouds! I felt so glamorous!

I wish I had such talent!

  40. For those of you who are wondering, here are some of the products & techniques we used to make it happen!

Marie drew the outline of the star in a darker foundation than the one I was wearing, so it could be easily erased if she made a mistake! For the outline of the star, I think she used a Kryolan Aquacolour (one you mix with water, it works more like a paint than a powder colour). She filled it in with some ULTRA-high pigment bright pink eye-shadow by Napoleon Perdis. Thennn on top of thaaaat she mixed some white irridescent glitter with some pink Napoleon Perdis shimmer powder, & covered the star with that. Woo woo!

She used the same N.P. eye-shadow on my other eye, but just used much less of it. I don’t know the names of any of the colours, unfortunately!

  41. Cosmonaut — No, it’s my digital SLR. It’s still my preferred camera!

Kori — I didn’t leave the house, unfortunately… next time!

rithrin — It’s by Tarina Tarantino :> I’ve never had a piece of jewellery that nets so many compliments. It’s a total magnet for anyone who likes anything sparkly!

  42. wow, love this.

  43. Gala, I think I just might love you.

Lol… cue stalker music. But you do amazing things with makeup. I love the way the star looks, especially how it balances out your hair colour.

I definitely have to try that one day.
And watch as my mom kills me. :]
